Girls’ Generation is Being Watched…A Lot

Girls’ Generation didn′t just heat up the stage during its performance at the 62nd NHK Red & White Song Battle, the girls actually caused the show′s viewership ratings to spike.

According to Japan’s Video Research, the average viewership rating for the first part of the 62nd NHK Red & White Song Battle, which aired on December 31, was 35.2 percent, and the second part, in which Korean singers strutted their stuff, recorded 41.6 percent. The viewership rating peaked at 44.7 percent during Girls’ Generation’s performance of Genie, recording the highest viewership ratings of the day’s broadcast.

Girls’ Generation was the fifth team to perform in the second part of the broadcast with hit song Genie. The girls showed off their legs in short black, gold and white skirts and opted for ankle boots instead of the tall boots they frequently wear.

The Red & White Song Battle is Japan’s largest year-end music festival, having recorded an average viewership rating of over 50 percent every year since its first broadcast in 1951. Girls’ Generation and Kara performed in the festival for the first time this year, while it was TVXQ′s third appearance.

TVXQ′s latest performance was the group′s first appearance in the festival since undergoing a change in member composition, and it received 49.7 percent of the votes in a popularity poll that took place during the broadcast, proving the K-Pop boom is still strong in Japan.
