Lee Seung Chul is Looking for a New Story to be Told in ‘Superstar K4’

Lee Seung Chul, who has been the judge of Mnet’s Superstar K since its beginnings, said at the press roundtable held on March 28 that he’s staying on the show because “Superstar K is like a documentary,” and that he “stayed to help the show deliver moving stories.”Lee Seung Chul said, “I thought a lot about whether I should join this season, but the one who started it needs to end it. I decided to join again since I witnessed its start and I wanted to be with it until its end.”

“The goal of Superstar K is to be a documentary that introduces talented people to the nation with their touching stories. I stayed because I wanted to meet people who would tell those touching stories,” he added.

“We want a person who can touch the hearts of the nation’s people,” Lee Seung Chul said. “I’ll be judging based on that.”

Psy joined the show as a new judge for the upcoming season. About Psy, Lee Seung Chul said, “Psy is the best judge to come to this upgraded audition program. He’s the most needed type of judge, who has producing skills, can write songs and has other singers sing them.”

The show is currently accepting applications through phone and self-produced videos, and 400,000 contestants have already applied. Superstar K4 will hold its regional preliminaries from April to July, and will start airing in August.

Superstar K started up in 2009 with its first season, and is the original audition program that started the audition program boom in Korea. Last year for Superstar K3, it gathered a whopping 1.96 million contestants, proving it was at the center of national attention. In its previous seasons it brought up the stars John Park, Huh Gak, Seo In Guk, Busker Busker and Ulala Session.
