Kang Ho Dong is Dearly Missed in ‘Strong Heart’ and ‘Radio Star’

MBC’s Kneedrop Guru, which closed its curtains last year, has found new life. It sometimes appears suddenly, while sometimes it appears with in a careful plan. No matter how it came to appear, the important thing is that it’s always brought up in support of the show and the Kneedrop Guru himself, Kang Ho Dong.

’Strong Heart’ remembers Kang Ho Dong

Kneedrop Guru first set up shop in 2006.

The show started off as a sketch, but after recruiting the cheeky guru Yoo Se Yoon and All Lies Band’s Woo Seung Min, it finally became whole in 2007.

It became a show in which stars talked about their troubles, and became the biggest late-night show on Wednesday.

One story about how Kneedrop Guru became the show we all remember was revealed. It was revealed through a program on another channel, SBS’ Strong Heart.

The ones who opened up on the casting decision were the members of Small Spring, home group of the cheeky guru Yoo Se Yoon.

In the June 19 broadcast of SBS’ Strong Heart, member Jang Dong Min said, “Yoo Se Yoon is really lucky.”

When the two started to become popular through KBS2’s Gag Concert, Yoo Se Yoon and Jang Dong Min were set up for an appearance on the biggest talk show of the time, SBS’ Ya Shim Man Man.

The duo prepared a series of stories for the day over four days’ time.

Jang Dong Min kept his side of the promise, setting Yoo Se Yoon to be the sarcastic character they planned him to be, but according to Jang Dong Min, Yoo Se Yoon didn’t keep his promise.

As an example, he touched on the reactions from the show’s MC Kang Ho Dong, saying, “Kang Ho Dong cheered for whatever Yoo Se Yoon said, but whenever I opened my mouth he turned his head away.”

After the episode of Ya Shim Man Man aired, Yoo Se Yoon and Jang Dong Min’s lives went in completely opposite directions.

“One day, Yoo Se Yoon called me and said, ‘Hyung, some guy that uses the Gyeongsang dialect is telling me to run to Yeoido. I’m scared.’ Of course, everyone could tell it was a call from Kang Ho Dong. He was cast for Kneedrop Guru the next day. The ‘Kneedrop Dance’ actually came from my idea.”

Jang Dong Min’s talk was sprinkled with images of Kang Ho Dong in past episodes of Kneedrop Guru.

Kang Ho Dong was Strong Heart’s former MC, and the show even voiced its support for the comedian through its captions after he announced his tentative retirement. It was a small detail, but it showed that Strong Heart’s love for Kang Ho Dong was great.

’Radio Star’ and ‘Kneedrop Guru’

Radio Star and Kneedrop Guru are like brothers. Radio Star is now on its own, but the shows actually started off as sections in MBC’s Golden Fishery.

Park Mi Sun spoke about Kneedrop Guru on Radio Star’s June 20 broadcast.

She said about the reason she turned down the many offers to appear on Kneedrop Guru, “I thought I would start crying if I appeared on Kneedrop Guru. I can’t stop once I start crying.”

Her perfectly ordered life proved to be a weakness for the comedienne. She said because her molded life hides so many sorrows under it, she was worried that would lead her to tears.

She also showed her consideration for her husband, Lee Bong Won. She said, “Even if I cry because of my own sorrows, so many articles will come out about it and my husband Lee Bong Won will be the one being blamed. People will think that I’m crying because of my husband. I thought if I started crying I would be burdening my husband. That’s why I turned downKneedrop Guru.”
