We know girl groups like Girls’ Generation and Kara have taken Japan by storm, but how does their popularity in the country compare to the Japanese girl groups?A graphic displaying the rank of girl groups in Japan with the title “Looking at Japanese Girl Group Rankings Just For Fun” was posted onto a message board recently, and fans may be surprised to learn which girl group came out on top.
Hint: It’s neither Girls’ Generation nor Kara.

The order was determined by the number of records sold by each girl group, and according to the graphic, Japan’s AKB48 sits at the top of the pyramid, in “The Fourth-Dimensional Wall That Can’t be Overcome” category, having sold more than one million records.
Meanwhile, Girls’ Generation and Kara have been lumped in the “Top Class” category with Japanese girl groups Nogizaka 46 and Perfume, having sold more than 100,000 copies of their records.
T-ara follow close behind in the “Upper Ranks” category with Japanese girl groups Morning Musume and Super Girls, while After School, Rainbow, 2NE1, Secret and 4minute round out the rankings.
We knew the girls were hot in Japan, but it looks like they still have a ways to go before they can say they are truly on top.
