Ulala Session’s Im Youn Taek released a medical reference written by his doctor regarding his stomach cancer.
He said about the reason he decided to release his reference, “I announced on June 15 that Ulala Session would be founding Ulala Company, that I would be getting married and that my bride-to-be is six months pregnant. I believe I should reveal my exact condition for those who continue to worry over and support me in my new start.”
In the reference, Im Youn Taek’s doctor, Yonsei Medical School’s oncology professor Ra Sun Young talked about how Im Youn Taek has endured his treatment and how she hopes the singer will continue to be a beacon of hope for cancer patients.
What follows is the complete text of professor Ra Sun Young’s reference on Im Youn Taek:
On January 2011, Mr. Im Youn Taek first visited the Yonsei University Health System’s Severance Hospital cancer center and was diagnosed with level 4 stomach cancer, far past the condition for which surgery is possible.
We implemented anticancer treatments to stop the disease from progressing any further, and even after the treatments started, he seemed to be adapting well and endured better than most other patients with his positive attitude. The results were good, so in May 2011 he received a gastrectomy.
Gastrectomies remove parts of the stomach, which usually make it difficult for patients to eat, but Im Youn Taek endured, received anticancer treatment after his surgery and managed to achieve great results on Superstar K as well.
From September 2011 it was possible for him to stop receiving treatment for about three months, but because cancer cells again appeared in his abdominal cavity, he started receiving more anticancer treatments with new medicine in December, and has been receiving the same treatment since.
I’ve met many patients as a doctor in oncology, and I can say he has endured much better than many other patients who receive the same treatment with the same level 4 cancer. I searched around for the reason, and I believe it was due not only to normal differences in sentiment between people, but also Im Youn Taek’s positive and determined attitude.
I believe that he resolved the physical and psychological difficulties that arose in the treatment of the disease with music, and his responsibility as a leader and the love and trust between his friends was the source of his power that helped him win against all difficulties.
As Im Youn Taek’s doctor, I believe that Ulala Session will continue to grow and that also personal happy events are ahead of him. I hope he will continue to receive treatment, sing healthily and give hope to the many patients fighting against cancer.
