Even with so many audition programs in Korea, Mnet’sSuperstar K4 has soared above and beyond, reaching a new record of two million applications for the upcoming new season. On June 21, Superstar K3 broke its past record of 1,970,000 applicants from Superstar K3 with more than two million. The application process opened for citizens on March 8 and has recorded and average of 18,867 people signing up each day.
The sign up was available through ARS, UCC, Kakao Talk and even karaoke rooms. The new record seems to have also been affected by the new singles of past contestants, John Park, Huh Gak, Busker Busker, and Ulala Session, which instantly became popular after their release with the general public.
On this new record, Mnet said, “It’s been confirmed once more that the program that bring applicants closer to their dreams and hope is Superstar K. With a larger pool of applicants, incomparable to other audition programs, we’re certain that the second Huh Gak, Ulala Session, and Busker Busker will be born, chosen by the nation.”
During the press conference in March, judges Lee Seung Chul and Psy announced that if the applications reach more than two million, the two singers will take off their shirts and climb the Chunggye Mountain.
It looks like they may have to keep their promises as the number of applicants is still growing.
With the program broadcasting in August 17, a good majority of the application process have been closed, leaving room for judges to cut down the number during the preliminary rounds.
